KP employees ready to make 'retreat', RC intervenes to stall move
PM package blues: Protest staged against Govt

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 3: Tired of false assurances and promises made by the government to improve their living conditions, the KP employees under PM's package working in Kashmir Valley packed their bag and baggage to move back to Jammu for good, without caring a bit about implications it could have on their job prospects. Timely intervention of the Relief Department authorities to prevent this step which could have proved an embarrassment to it, however, saved the government from facing such a situation. Crying hoarse for basic facilities for the last three years of their stay in Kashmir Valley, the employees today staged protest demonstration to register their anger and resentment over continued indifference of the government towards what they have been asking for- minimum basic facilities and proper accomodation that would make their day to day survival better.
The employees staged protest demonstration at Sheikhpora in Budgam district, one of the 8 camps were they stay while working in various departments ,nearer to their camp destinations. Even though it was a token protest staged to express their plight due to lack of basic faclities, it made some impact as some of the employees who were about to leave with their baggage stirred the officials at the helm who made appearance on the scene only to pacify the agitating employees comprising both boys and girls. The main demand they echoed and on account of which their problems have aggravated is the lack of a proper and decent accomodation in almost all the camps for them. Sensing trouble and realizing the 'return move' on angry note would demean and reverse the purpose of what Centre had envisaged while announcing the employment package for the community youth, the Relief COmmissioner is said to directed the DC relief to pacify the employees with time bound steps to address their concerns. DC relief caters to matters of all the employees staying at various district headquarters in 8 camps.
According to agitating employees, who staged protest for the first time in three years, the concerned authorities assured everything would set right in due course and asked them not to take any hasty step on retreat from Valley. Consequent upon what looked to employees as meanigful intervention, the employees suspended the strike today and also decided to wait for next move from the goevrnment in ameliorating their living conditions. Those who were ready to move back have also deferred their plans for now. Pertinent to mention is that in a set of just two rooms at least three employees share the accomodation which leaves the space congested when other family members join in. Lack of proper accomodation in most of the camps is also affecting the entire family unit even with just one child as sharing makes it difficult to respect each other's privacy, say the aggrieved employees. There are other issues of day to day survival as well which have left employees in a state of disgust and despair. It remains to be seen whether the government which looked alert on employees' agitation and return back move, would take any step or not.
