| US Embassy official visit Model Academy | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 4: Diane Miller, Regional English Language Officer, US Embassy, New Delhi, visited Model Academy School which is the only school in J&K state to provide the English Access Microscholarship Program. Miller was accompanied by Rachna Sharma, Coordinator Access Program, India. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs funds the two year program in India and around the world. Since its inception in 2004, approximately 95,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the Access Program. Students learn about American society and culture, democratic values and attend field trips to enhance their experience. It provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 13-20 year-olds from economically disadvantaged sectors through after-school classes and intensive sessions. Participants also gain the ability to compete for and participate in future exchanges and study in the United States.? She visited the Access classrooms and interacted with the students. She asked them about their studies, posed questions about US culture and history, famous American personalities and enquired about celebrations of different important days. Later the students presented a small cultural programme which comprised an English song and an English skit. The students also shared their experiences about the Access programme. Ms. Miller congratulated the students for their efforts. She encouraged them to continue learning and acquiring English language skills and hoped that they would be able to apply for higher education in the United States. She also thanked Dr. Adit Gupta, the Programme Director for providing the facilities necessary for running this programme. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Adit Gupta expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries for their visit and assured them of providing fullest support in making this programme a grand success. Nishtha Aggarwal, compered the programme and Purnima Sharma both Access students presented a vote of thanks. |
