Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 4: In less than a week after BJP's Lalkar rally, Congress is readying itself for a rather similar show of strength in the winter capital with none else than its president Sonia Gandhi to address the rally, the date and venue of which would be decided soon. The rally almost on same pattern is aimed to give the rival an answer to the euphoria it managed to generate with Modi wave but more than that its urgency is being felt to boost the morale of the party workers and cadres that has received a psychological dent, also on account of the pattern of voting and projections in exit polls in the 4 crucial states.
Sources said Congress is gearing up a massive show of strength sometime in the middle of December in Jammu in which apart from other dignitaries of the party president Sonia Gandhi would be star attraction. Sources said while the urgency of such a show to match with the success and popularity of BJP's lalkar rally has been conveyed by the state leadership, even though such rallies would be in the pipeline of hectic election schedule in run up to elections next year. Sources confirmed that in order to have assessment of the preparations and give some direction to the functionaries, Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is arriving on December 6 to winter capital where he would attend series of meetings with leaders of the party.
Sources said while state party president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz and Deputy CLP leader Mohammad Niaz were called by the high command to New Delhi, a formal meeting to discuss certain vital issues related to the big rally under consideration was held today in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by vice president Rahul Gandhi besides the presence of Ambika Soni, incharge for J&K, senior leader Janardan Dwivedi who is understood to be having comprehensive assessment of J&K political scenario, and AICC secretary Mohi-nul-Haq. Apart from other issues significant from the point of view of strengthening party at the organizational level, sources said the matters related to the rally being organised in Jammu were discussed threadbare.
Prof Soz who just returned from his tour of twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch is understood to have given his assessment of the party at the ground level and the inputs are said to be crucial determinants of mood of masses in that region vis-a-vis Congress. Sources also said the high command has not yet given final nod on the date of the rally and it would be done after results of the elections would be announced on December 8. Most likely, the rally would be organised on or after December 15, sources said.
