Where is the signed so-called Delhi Agreement?
Beg preaching falsehood
12/4/2013 10:54:59 PM
Neha
Jammu, Dec 4: NC MP Mehboob Beg on December 3 spoke a white lie while participating in a TV debate on Article 370. His interventions were nothing but a bundle of lies. There was none in the programme who could expose his lies and attempts at misleading the people. Beg took advantage of the situation and spoke nothing but lies taking all the co-panelists for a ride. Beg, for example, said that Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Jammu and Kashmir Wazir-e-Azam Sheikh Abdullah had signed an agreement in 1952 about the political future of the state. He called it Delhi Agreement of 1952. It was a false statement.
There exists no signed Delhi agreement as a known India-baiter Beg claimed or as many others of his ilk claim. It was a mere statement made by two individuals on July 24, 1952 and a statement just cannot be taken to mean an agreement. It was a statement on the negotiations which had taken place between Nehru and the Sheikh and it was never approved by the Indian Parliament.
It needs to be noted that during the regime of Farooq Abdullah, a J&K Government-sponsored two-day seminar on autonomy which was held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar. It was a NC-dominated seminar. All the Ministers and all the NC lawmakers were there in strength. Abdul Rahim Rather, presently Finance Minister, was also present. Farooq Abdullah remained present on both the days and the then Law Minister P L Handoo made the opening remarks. Only a couple of non-NC men, including pro-autonomy Praful Bidwai, had been invited to participate in the seminar. One of them was Prof Hari Om of Jammu University. The then Director of Information K B Jandial was also there.
During the seminar, Prof Hari Om asked the NC leadership to provide him a signed copy of the so-called Delhi Agreement and assured the NC leadership that if he got the signed copy of the agreement from them he would start writing against New Delhi and in favour of the NC. Praful Bidwai was chairing the session. Prof Hari Om's suggestion upset many NC participants, including Farooq Abdullah. Farooq Abdullah wanted to respond, but it was Abdul Rahim Rather who came on to the dais to give his response. Without mincing words, Abdul Rahim Rather acknowledged that "yes, there exists no signed Delhi Agreement" and that "it was a statement made by Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah". Beg should meet Farooq Abdullah and his knowledge and stop making false and atrocious statements.
