Power crisis put industrial sector in quandary
12/4/2013 11:03:47 PM
Et Report
Kathua, Dec 4: Prolonged power curtailment in Kathua district has hit the industrial production to a great extent further affecting industrial sector and aggrieved industrialists are up in arms against the concerned authorities who called on SE M&RE Kathua to raise their issue. Entrepreneurs warned if PDD continues 18 hour power curtailment to industrial sector the industrialists are left with no option but to close their units.
According to some industrial entrepreneurs who preferred anonymity, the ongoing 12 to 18 hour power curtailment (scheduled and unscheduled) in the district has virtually taken toll of industrial production to a great extent and if the immediate remedial steps are not taken to restore better 'power supply' to industrial sector the unit holders will be forced to close their units owing to the industries becoming a 'white elephant.' The industrialists are up in arms against the Government and a delegation had also called on SE M&RE Kathua yesterday and apprised him of their plight. They warned that in case the PDD continues 18 hour power curtailment to organized sector the industrialists are left with no option but to close their units. The delegation informed the SE M&RE Kathua that besides scheduled nine hour power cut the industrial area is facing 18 hour power cut in Kathua district due to the unscheduled curtailments despite the Government's assurance to provide round the clock power supply to industrial belt in organized sector. Sources said that on the one hand the Government was claiming to boost the industry in the State and on the other hand it is unable to provide the basic facilities necessary for the growth of industries in the State. This way, how people will be encouraged of investing in industrial sector. Sources alleged when organized industrial sector faces 12 to 18 hour power cut in the district the stone crushers (which fall in unorganized sector) areas especially in Ravi belt are getting power supply round the clock in open violation of rule that stone crushers should be closed during night hours and should be provided power for eight hours only during the day. They alleged that the authorities have not curtailed the grant of permission in opening of stone crushers in Ravi belt as over 20 crushers presently function in the area as end product is supplied to Punjab where the quarrying in river bed has been banned. And unauthorized pilferage of power to stone crushers has resulted into higher demand of power in Kathua industrial sector which is on the verge of collapse.
