| Save horticulture in Kashmir: JKKT | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 14: Expressing serious concern over unchecked import of spurious fertilizers and pesticides in the state, due to which farming community is suffering losses, the Jammu and Kashmir Kisan Tehreek (JKKT) has sought prompt action from the government to check the menace. General Secretary JKKT, Ghulam Nabi Malik has said that spurious fertilizers and pesticides have added to the miseries of farmers who have already suffered huge losses due to hailstorms, incessant rains and abnormal weather conditions.Referring to the recent protests by farmers against sub standard fertilizers and pesticides in Shopian, Malik said that lackadaisical response of the concerned agencies to check this menace has compelled the peasant community to protest. "For past few years substandard fertilizers and pesticides are openly sold in market and authorities are watching all this as mute spectators", he alleged. While reiterating the Tehreek's demand for providing insurance cover to the cultivators to insulate them from contingency losses, Malik stressed for quality control of the fertilizers and chemicals and urged upon the government to activate the Department of Horticulture and its field and enforcement agencies to deal with this menace effectively. |
