Diabetes risk gene may have been inherited from Neanderthals
12/26/2013 10:10:50 PM

Researchers have found a new genetic clue that
increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in Latin
Americans. The genetic research, conducted by the SIGMA Type 2 Diabetes Consortium, reveals that the diabetes gene may have come from Neanderthals. The gene variant was detected in a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) of more than 8,000 Mexicans and other Latin Americans.
The gene named SLC16A11 sequence associated with risk of type 2 diabetes is found in a newly sequenced Neanderthal genome.
Analysis indicate that people who carry the higher risk version of the gene are 25 percent more likely to have diabetes than those who do not, and people who inherited copies from both parents are 50 percent more likely to have diabetes.
The study had been published in journal Nature.
