| After Tawi, pollution threatens historic Ranbir Canal | | Indifferent Govt extends a cold shoulder | | ET Report Jammu, Dec 26: Worried over pollution threat posed to Ranbir Canal due to diversion of entire drainage water of the catchment area into it, the environmentalists have sought immediate intervention of State Government in the matter. The Ranbir Canal is facing grave pollution threat and if immediate steps are not taken to check the same, the canal water will become harmful even for animals to drink, said Dr. K.K.Gupta an environmentalist heading save Ranbir Canal Andolan. He said right from its head at Akhnoor all drainage nullahas of catchment directly flow in the canal with Irrigation and Flood Control department maintaining a stoic silence on the same. He said besides drainage water of entire catchment, the inorganic and organic material is also thrown into the canal by the people living along it. This has made the canal water toxic, he added. He said if immediate steps were not taken to check the level of pollution into the canal the water will become harmful for animals as well as crops in future. Dr Gupta said save Ranbir Canal Andolan was launched by him in association with other environmentalists to create a public conscience of saving the canal from increasing pollution. Dr Gupta said the pollution control board should also take immediate steps in this regard and impose fine on people throwing intoxicants into the canal. He said till Board will not go for punitive action against defaulters the situation will not improve. Dr Gupta has been extended full support by former corporators Ashok Manhas and Omi Khajuria. They said people are worried over the increasing threat to canal. They said scores of cremation grounds exist on the bank of the canal and people use this water for performance of the last rites of dead. They said that in coming days campaign will be intensified to involve the public for depolluting the canal. They said earlier I&FC Department has taken some measures for freeing canal from pollutants but later the Department also closed its eyes. |
