| Power Crisis: Massive protests in Anantnag; Highway, Pahalgam Road blocked | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 26: Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway and Anantnag-Pahalgam road was suspended after massive demonstrations against major power crisis in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. A large number of people, including women and children, took to streets at Mir Bazar in Anantnag on the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. The protesters raised slogans against the Power Development Department (PDD) and state government for frequent and unscheduled power cuts in the area. Since there was only one-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu today, a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, got stranded after they too were not allowed by the demonstrators. Traffic was allowed only after several hours when the district authorities and senior police officers succeeded in persuing the demonstrators that their power problem will be taken up with the senior PDD officers. Similar demonstrations were also witnessed on world famous health resort of Pahalgam road as people alleged that they hardly get any electricity. People, including women, blocked the road and raised slogans against the PDD, alleging that they were being victimised. The demonstrators alleged major power cuts which has affected the studies of their children. Meanwhile CPI (M) activists also held a strong protest demonstration in Kulgam against frequent power cuts. |
