Bijay Charak

Jammu, Dec 25: Twenty-year-old Mohammad Rafiq of village Sawgian, district Poonch has become a burden on his family, thanks to the deadly quake of 2005 and indifference of the government.
Narrating his woeful tale, Rafiq told Early Times: "I was trekking a mountain on way to my school when everything around me was shaking like a jelly. Huge stones were falling from the mountain. A big stone hit my leg. It was very painful and I cried. Someone took me to district hospital where my leg was amputated."
He further said that he was given Rs. 20,000 as relief from state government while the Governor NN vohara promised a government job, after passing the 8the class examination. " I continued my education and am in 10th class now but no job has been offered to me," he rued.
Pertinently Rafiq is elder among six sisters and one brother.
"My father is doing menial jobs and manages the family with difficulty. We have scant agricultural land, which is un-irrigated and gives only one crop a season. My father has burden of six daughters all of whom are unmarried. All my 6 sisters and brother are also studying in primary school and in meager income of my father, the requirement of books, uniform and others things are not met. The hopes of family were on me, but now I am also become a burden on my family", he said.
He wants to work at a shop or elsewhere to lessen the burden on his father. "Poonch city is very far from my village. The only ray of hope is Governor's assurance of a government job. I want to work.I do not want to be a beggar," he said.
