Yet another Congress' attempt to hoodwink ignored Jammu
Equitable development of three regions

Jammu, Dec 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) and the Congress Ministers in the Omar Abdullah-led coalition Government would not reform themselves taking into consideration the mood of the people of Jammu province. This became clear on December 28, when the JKPCC and Jammu District Congress Committee (JDCC) members organized a function in connection with the foundation day of the Congress party. It was on December 28, 1885 that the Britons founded the Congress party at Mumbai with the help of 72 English educated Indians drawn from different parts of British India to check the ongoing freedom struggle in the country.
During the function, several Congress leaders and Ministers spoke on the role the Congress played during these 128 years of its emergence. They also used the opportunity to reflect on the role they had been playing in Jammu and Kashmir. Some of them asserted that they alone could ensure equitable and balanced development in all the three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and also said that the Congress party would emerge stronger after the next Assembly election. Indeed, they made false claims. It is basically the Congress that has harmed the state by constantly hobnobbing with communal and pro-autonomy forces in Kashmir. Besides, it is the Congress party and Congress party alone which is responsible for the neglect of Jammu province and Ladakh region. The reason is simple: The Congress has all along sided with the Valley-centric Kashmiri leadership and willingly and happily became a party to the anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh policies devised and implemented ruthlessly by the Kashmiri ruling elite.
That the Congress has always betrayed the people of Jammu province and bartered their legitimate rights and interests could be seen from the fact that it did not fulfill the poll promises it solemnly made in its 2002 and 2008 election manifestos. In 2002, the Congress had promised that, if elected to power, it would set up regional development board in Jammu, constitute delimitation commission, implement Wazir Commission report and end discriminatory policies, but did nothing whatsoever to fulfill any of these four promises. Again, in 2008, the Congress had held out almost identical commitments, including the commitment that it would amend the State Constitution to set up an empowered regional council in Jammu, but did nothing in this regard or to fulfill other solemn promises. On the contrary, it gave unflinching support to the Kashmir-based parties so that they could further harm the interests of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region. Had the Congress fulfilled even half of the promises, there would not have such demands in Jammu and Ladakh as trifurcation/reorganization and Union Territory status.
When will the JKPCC and the Congress Ministers rise to the occasion and fulfill the promises the Congress made from time to time? It must refashion its whole approach towards Jammu and Ladakh taking into consideration their rights, interests and aspirations and work accordingly without, of course, jeopardizing the legitimate interests of Kashmir. The people of Jammu and Ladakh want their own due share without harming Kashmir. Their approach is holistic and democratic and it needs to be appreciated by one and all.
