Heavy Snowfall Decorates Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Even as heavy snowfall decorated Kashmir in white colour, it also closed the national highway and forced the authorities to issue a avalanche warning.
With the MET office predicting moderate to heavy snowfall till January 2, the decoration may turn into a nightmare. The MET office has also predicted avalanches. The weather, MeT office said is likely to improve after January 2.
The fresh snowfall which decorated Kashmir in white colour, closed the national highway, increased chances of avalanches in upper reaches, followed by forecast of MeT department predicting moderate to heavy snowfall till January 2nd, besides three youth buried under an avalanche were rescued.
The Director MeT, Sonum Lotus in a communique for general awareness said that snowfall will continue till January 1. It can improve thereafter but he also predicted that for the next five days isolated light snowfall is expected on 2nd of January and mainly dry weather thereafter."
MeT Department while issuing warning of heavy snowfall in near future also predicted heavy to very heavy snowfall ( greater than or equal to 64cms) during next 24hrs and warned that people living on the higher reaches of Kashmir must not venture outside in view of avalanche threat.
According to the reports last received from different areas across the Kashmir, snowfall received in Srinagar 6 inches, Ganderbal 2 inches, Shopian main 12 inches, Mughal road surroundings 3 feet, Kulgam upper reaches 3 feet, Pahalgam 3 feet, Kokernag 3 feet, Gulmarg 3 feet, Banihal-3 feet, while as in Kargil of Ladakh division moderate snowfall was recorded.
Traffic control unit Ramban revealed that amid heavy snowfall in Banihal, Jawahar tunnel, Qazigund and Patnitop areas since early this morning vehicular movement on the national highway was closed and as per orders issued it will remain suspended till further orders and vehicles from either Jammu or Srinagar side till further orders will not be allowed to ply on national highway.
Pertinently as MeT department had already issued avalanche warnings pre fresh snowfall in Kashmir after fast speeding winds had started blowing in upper reaches of Kashmir, Police in central Kashmir's Ganderbal District rescued three youth who were buried under an avalanche in Kangan area.
The statement received in this regard revealed that three local youth namely Riyaz Ahmad Bijad, Parvez Ahmad and Riyaz Ahmad of Sarfaraw- Gund area of Ganderbal who had gone in the forest area for collection of firewood were hit by an avalanche and soon after the news of these spread in the area, Ganderbal police with the help of locals though reached to the spot, however, were only able to rescue two of them while as the third one namely Riyaz Ahmad Bijad son of Nisar Ahmad was completely buried under the snow and almost after three hours of rescue operation he was though also retrieved from the snow but keeping in view his critical condition he was shifted to SKIMS Srinagar for further treatment.
