sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 4: Organised by the All J&K Chess Association, the Jammu Division Senior Open Chess Tournament got underway at Hotel Nek, here today. In all, 35 prominent players of the division are taking part in this five-round competition being held under Swiss system. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by vice-president of the Association, Baldev Raj. Top seeds, Sumit Grover and Arvindu Sharma, Ravi Sharma, Maxim Singh Sudan won their respective matches to advance into the second round. To female players, Meenal Gupta and Arushi Kotwal are also participating in this senior group tournament. Anil Kotwal and Ritwan Sauntra are the Arbiters for this three-day tournament. "It will be out of this competition that the Association shall pick up seven top players for the upcoming state championship," informed Baldev Raj in his inaugural address.
Volleyball tourney at Bari Brahmana from Jan 25 8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 4: The Sehyog Committee, in a meeting held here today, has decided to organise open volleyball tournament at sports stadium, Bari Brahama, here from January 25. "The two-day competition shall be organised under the aegis of Volleyball Association of J&K. The winner and runners-up teams shall get a cash prize of Rs 11,000 and 8100 respectively," said secretary of the Sehyog Committee, Rakesh Sambyal. The organising committee has asked the interested clubs to submit their entries before January 25 to confirm their participation.
4th Police Martyrs' Memorial NZ T20 Stadium XI, KCC Jammu sail into next round
8 sports reporter KATHUA, Jan 4: Stadium XI Kathua and KCC Jammu advanced into the next round of the ongoing 4th Police Martyrs' Memorial North Zone Twenty20 Cricket Championship, organised by Shaheed Welfare Committee in collaboration with J&K Police at Sports Stadium, here today. In the first match of the day, Stadium XI Kathua registered a 10 runs win over Jammu Cricket Club (JCC) Jammu. Batting first, after winning the toss, Stadium XI set a target of 127 runs. In reply, JCC Jammu bowled out for 116 runs. For their match winning innings, Ankush and Shiv Dutt shared the man of the match cash prize of Rs 1500. Meanwhile, in another match, KCC Jammu defeated Shabnam Cricket Club (SCC) Hoshiarpur by 20 runs. After winning the toss and batting first, KCC Jammu made 148 runs losing seven wickets. Later, SCC Hoshiarpur could not reach the required total and exhausted their quota of overs for 129 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Romy of KCC Jammu declared man of the match for his superb innings of 66 runs.
Jammu United wins opening tie in Christmas Gold Cup 8 sports reporter JAMMU, Jan 4: Jammu United clinched the opening thriller outplaying Sainik Colony Club 4-3 in tie-breaker in the 8th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament, organised by All J&K Christian Welfare Association at GGM Science College ground, here today. In the stipulated time the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Jammu United took the first lead when they successfully converted a penalty kick awarded in their favour in the eighth minute through Ramesh. It was followed by a dilly dallying battle with attacks and counter attacks. Desperate to bring in an equalizer, Sainik Colony succeeded in their moves and finally leveled the score on board with Swarn Pal netting the ball. However, in tie-breaker, Jammu United emerged winner making it 4-3. Sahil Dogra, Stenzin, Koushal Sharma and Ramesh Kumar successfully converted the penalties into goal. From Sainik Colony, Gagandeep, Vishal Verma and Sajeed Ehsan were the scorers. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and Transport, Choudhary Ramzan by cutting the Christmas cake in a well attended function. Director General of Police, Prisons, K Rajendra Kumar was guest of honour. Earlier, chairman of the organising committee, S M Gill welcomed the distinguished gathering and presented a detailed report of the tournament. Prominent among those who attended the opening function were R K Kohli, Kuldeep Singh, Surinder Singh Bunty, Sheikh Mehmood, Bishap Nisar, Bishap Udhay Singh, David Masih, Yusuf Don and Feastus Sotra. Earlier, before start of the game, both the teams as also other distinguished gathering paid tributes to veteran football player of the state, Master Saleem Masih, who breathed his last on January two after a brief illness.
