| Samba Police seizes 14 bovine animals | | Bovine smuggling unabated in absence of stringent laws | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 4 : With various lacunas in law the police are unable to check the increasing bovine smuggling from Punjab and Jammu region to Kashmir valley which is increasing alarmingly especially after the opening of Mughal road for vehicular traffic. Sources said dozens of vehicles carrying bovine animals are daily crossing Mughal road to reach Kashmir valley. Earlier, Rajouri & Poonch Police had tightened its noose on the bovine smugglers and seized scores of trucks with hundreds of bovine animals in a single day. This even led to an attack on police party at Rajouri. A senior police officer on anonymity said that police is trying its best to control the menace of bovine smuggling but there should be stringent laws for punishing the smugglers. In absence of a stringent law, Police cannot contain bovine smuggling. He said after police seizes such animals or arrests the smugglers they seek bail in court of law and get the animals also released. "Only if there are provisions for stringent penalty, the menace can be checked by Police" he added. Sources said to evade the police eye the smugglers take the animals on foot via jungles and board them in trucks at isolated place to take them to Kashmir valley for supply. The animals on foot are carried from Akhnoor, Reasi villages, some parts of Rajouri, Kalakote and Nowshera and later smuggled to valley, sources added. Even the bovine animals loaded in trucks are also carried from Punjab via alternative road from Madhavpur to Kathua bypassing National Highway. Many a times the smugglers are arrested and vehicles and animals seized. Today, Ghagwal Police in Samba district in two separate incidents seized 4 and 10 bovine animals being carried to Kashmir valley. The police also arrested 2 persons and registered a case against them. Two days back 20 animals were also seized by Samba Police & prior to it in last week, 14 animals were seized by Kathua Police in two separate incidents which were being carried from Punjab to J&K. Also, on December 30, 18 bovine animals were seized at three separate nakas by Kathua and Samba police. But the smugglers managed to escape. Meanwhile Hindu organisations including VHP- Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena has expressed its concern over increasing bovine smuggling from region and warned agitation if it is not contained immediately. |
