| To maintain quality of supplies through CAPD stores, inspection on cards | | |

Jammu, Jan 4 : Following large scale of complaints and allegation of poor condition of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) godowns, large scale inspection has been ordered of all the storage facilities in Jammu supplying ration to the people in the region.
Official sources said that team from Consumers Affairs Department and district officials have decided to verify all the facilities so that necessary steps are taken to ensure the quality is maintained and stores where the food commodities are stored are in good shape.
"There are several places where storage space is in less but efforts are being made to modernize so as to ensure quality is maintained, sources said. They said that at some places rodents like rats and other insects are breeding and are causing health hazard for consumers of the food grains.
Here it needs to mention that Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shant Manu had ordered inquiry after skeleton of rodents were found in food grain storage house at Ware House some three year ago.
"Though it was being used as dumping space for discarded food grains not fit for human consumption, but it was close to the full fledged storage facilities which supply food grains to several parts of Jammu city, so an inquiry was initiated.
Concerned officers were asked not only to ensure adequate availability of essential commodities but also to ensure quality of ration supplies across Jammu division for the convenience of people and need for personally monitoring ration supply to far-flung and remote areas of division, which remain cutoff for several months during winter months.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu said that it has been decided to conduct regular checks of buildings which storage food grains.
In December 2012, government had directed officials to check the ration being supplied by Food Corporation of India (FCI), after complaints of poor food grains being dumped in Jammu region. |
