Install CCTV cameras at public places, shopping malls: DM

BARAMULLA, Feb 10: A week after the killing of a student outside a coaching center, the administration in this North Kashmir district has ordered immediate installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras at important public places.
The directions came after the student Irshad Ahmad Ganaie (22) a resident of Ushkara was allegedly stabbed by another student Irfan Farooq Bhat over some issue near Ahmad complex here on last Monday.
"For ensuring safety and security of the people, it has become expedient to have the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at the places of public importance, where public gathering and movement of people in large number is observed," the District Magistrate Baramulla writes in order DMB/ PS/5268.
The order further reads, "Owners of shopping malls, complexes, business establishments shall have to install CCTVs in their business establishments within a period of 15 days and ensure the arrangement of private security at their respective units in the interest of safeguarding the general public and to avoid any loss of public property besides to restrict the movement of unlawful elements."
The development came after a week, when District administration had called an emergency meeting with senior citizens and civil society members of the town. During the meeting all members impressed that remedial measures should be taken so that no untoward incident takes place in future and installation of CCTVs is one of them and at least 10 coaching centers were sealed by the team.
The 10 coaching centers sealed by a team constituted by the district administration to check veracity and authenticity of coaching centers include School for Commerce and Economics, Iqra Institute of English Care, A.Z's Institute of Commerce and Business Studies, Jet King English Care Academy, Right Track Tuition Centers, Axis Academy, BBC Broken Heaven Academy, Edu Care Coaching Institute and Eco Club.
Javid Ganai, brother of deceased student while welcoming the decision of installing the CCTV cameras said that the incident relating to the death of his brother had not happened if the step would have been taken earlier. "We welcome this step and I wish it should have been taken earlier.
Let everyone follow the orders without any delay so that there is no more murder of an innocent student," he said.
An academician Javid Ahmad Shah, while sharing his views told Early Times that installation of CCTV cameras should not be limited to shopping malls or complexes, but for important public places like, hospitals, colleges, schools, banks, hotels and restaurants so that no untoward incident takes place in future.
