| Hats off to Muslims of Jammu province | | Hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru | | Rustam JAMMU, Feb 10: A three-day state-level shutdown call given by extremists and separatists in Kashmir as a mark of protest against the execution of Parliament terror attack convict Mohammad Azal Guru, who was hanged and buried within the Tihar jail premises on February 9 last, and JKLF founder, Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, who was sent to the gallows and buried inside the same jail on February 11, 1984, did not evoke any positive response. Leave aside a few incidents of stone pelting in different parts of the Kashmir Valley. Reports from across the Kashmir Valley suggested that the people of Kashmir cooperated with the law and order authorities and defeated the evil game plan of the vested interests in Kashmir who wanted to create a law and order problem in the Valley. "The situation remained normal throughout Kashmir valley. However, some minor stone pelting incidents have been reported from Naidkhai Sumbal, Papchan, main Chowk Bandipora, Margund Kangan and Hadipora Sopore. There are no reports of any injury to anybody so far," read an official handout of police. The fact of the matter is that an overwhelming majority of people in Kashmir Valley did not pay any heed to the calls given by various separatist leaders and that they preferred to remain confined within the four walls of their houses, instead of coming on to the roads to confront the law and order authorities and disturb peace. It should establish that the separatists have lost their appeal and sheen and that they do not enjoy any popular support. The people of Kashmir deserve appreciation for what they did to defeat the dubious game plan of extremists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who been surving and thriving on the blood and sweat of general public. The Muslims of Jammu province, including those inhabiting Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri districts and Kargil district in Ladakh deserve appreciation once again all the more for showing the rightful place to the extremists and separatists in Kashmir by rejecting outright their shutdown call. The entire Jammu province remained peaceful with the business establishments belonging to the majority community remained open, despite the fact that February 9 was Sunday. Not a single untoward incident took place anywhere in Jammu province. Similarly, the people of Kargil once again demonstrated their hatred from the extremists in Kashmir by ignoring the shutdown call. The kind of response the separatists' shutdown call evoked in the state should establish three things. One, they have no support-base in Jammu province. Two, they are looked down upon by the people of Ladakh. Three, the people of Kashmir want peace and they do not to obey the diktats of the extremists and separatists in Kashmir. It is time for policy planners in New Delhi and international community to call the bluff of Kashmiri separatists and recognize that there are only fringe elements in the Valley who at intervals seek to create troubles. |
