| Yusmarg ignored : Locals want introduction of Winter Sports | | | Et Report
Budgam, Feb 10 : From the past two months Gulmarg is witnessing a lot of winter sports activities which include ice skating , snow skiing and heli-skiing but the Tourism department has ignored many other similar areas of Kashmir which have great potential for winter sports. Yusmarg in central Kashmr's Budgam district is one of such high potential place which seems to have been ignored by the Government. Yusmarg is located around 48 kilometres from Srinagar and the famous sufi shrine of Sheikh Norudin Wali at Charar I Charief falls enroute. This place has green grassy pastures in summers stretching to acres of land, the dense forests full of pine trees, with the backdrop of splendid snow capped mountains . Just one and a half hours drive from Srinagar city centre Yusmarg is the perfect place for outings not only in summer months but this is a perfect location for winter tourism as well. While talking to Early Times, Manager J&K Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) Yusmarg Mohammad Shabaan said that Yousmarg has enormous potential for winter sports activity because the place has nice slopes necessary for undertaking skiing and Snowboarding. At an average there is more than 4 foot snowfall in Yusmarg during peak winter months. " There is nice accommodation and infrastructure at Yusmarg and JKTDC owns as many as eight with more than nineteen bedrooms available at modest rates" Mohammad Shabaan added " Some years back people used to avoid to visit Yusmarg due to bad road condition , but now we have nice blacktopped road from Srinagar to this place . We appeal Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Toursim Minister to initiate winter sports activities in Yusmarg which always witnesses good snowfall in winters and the area has fine slopes as well" said Ghulam Mohammad Ahangar local Sarpanch of Yousmarg Nagbal Tourism department and Yusmarg Development Authority (YDA) also have good number huts and inspection bungalows available at Yusmarg. The YDA has undertaken lots of developmental eco friendly activities in the area without destroying the fragile environment said a local resident Abdul Salam Ahangar .
