No end to Jammu's traffic blues
Additional deployment fails to make a difference

Jammu, Feb 10: Despite additional deployment of 'men in blue' on the city roads, Jammu's traffic woes have continued to increase due to rapidly swelling vehicular population and lack of civic sense on part of drivers, commuters and even shopkeepers.
" Traffic jams have become a routine as Traffic cops appear on the road only when there is a VIP movement," said Narinder, a shopkeeper from Jewal, one of overcrowded localities of the city.
He said people park their vehicles on road side which also leads to jams.
"Traffic cops rarely ask the vehicle owners to park their cars properly. When any VIP gets stuck in the jam, his personal security men deflate the tyres of the vehicles wrongly parked," Jan added.
The city has shortage of parking lots, but people mostly prefer to park their cars on road side. "Minibuses which operate in the city have no fixed stops. They stop anywhere and everywhere. Even traffic cops turn a blind eye towards the violations which erring minibus drivers commit. It seems these people grease the palms of traffic cops," alleged, Kunal Singh, college student.
People, who travel from Janipur to Bus stand daily, claim that they get stuck in traffic snarls for hours together. "We get stuck at Janipur, Sarwal, Newplot, Amphala Chowk , Rehari, KC Chowk and Bustand during any time. Absence of traffic cops on the roads adds to our woes" he said.
"If you want to find the traffic cops you can locate them on entry and exit points of the city as they park their vehicles there and collect money on one or other pretext from the load carriers and truck drivers entering into the city," he alleged.
Meanwhile traffic police continued to argue shortage of man power for traffic regulation. A traffic cop deployed at Bus Stand said that it was difficult to manage huge vehicles with few men.
"Department needs more cops to ensure smooth flow of traffic. With the shifting of Secretariat, the vehicular population has turned double," he added.
However, the official did not divulge the details about the floating traffic, including Army and tourist vehicles in the city. He said that free movement of School Buses on almost all the roads on the outskirts of the city is another major problem causing traffic jams.
"The problem is that the School Buses force their entry even into the congested city areas during morning and day hours", the cop added.
When contacted Superintendent of Police Traffic, Jammu, Pawan Parihar said that traffic police was doing their best to regulate traffic system, in the city.
"Recently, the traffic police was strengthened with deployment of SPOs", he said, adding that the concerned SHOs were also asked to regulate traffic movement in their respective areas.
Being asked about traffic congestion in General Bus stand, he said that more cops would be deployed at Bus Stand. "From tomorrow, there will be no complaints of traffic jamming at Bus Stand and Jewal Chowk", he assured.
