| AAP appeals Commissioner SMC to intervene | | SMC’s Garbage dump on Doodh Ganga canal | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 6: "Clean Srinagar , Green Srinagar" is the slogan of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) , but one cannot believe that the same agency (SMC) which is claiming to make Srinagar city clean and green is itself destroying the environment by polluting one of the famous canals flowing through Srinagar city-the Doodh Ganga canal.
Ggarbage collected from various parts of Bagh e Mehtab area of Srinagar city is being dumped on the banks of Doodh Ganga canal near Baghi Mehtab railway bridge.
AAP leader Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat said that the garbage is being dumped near the canal from last many months and this has caused serious environmental problems in the area.
Dr Muzaffar said that other nearby localities such as Gulzarpora, Canal avenue Wanabal , Mochwa etc are also under serious threat.
He said that people especially children are reluctant to walk through the area as there are dozens of dogs near the garbage dumpers who have created havoc in the area. "Irony is that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) whose slogan is clean and green slogan are dumping all the filth and waste near the banks of Doodh Ganga water canal and the same water is being used for drinking purposes as well as after filtration by PHE, I have taken up the matter with Commissioner SMC Dr G N Qasba who has assured me of immediate action".
"We hope that Commissioner SMC will take action against the concerned ward officer for allowing usage of a water body for dumping of waste material.
If these officials do it , what kind of environmental education they will give to people living around Srinagar city"? said Mir Aaijaz another AAP activist , If this dumping site is not shifted immediately, we would launch strong agitation in the area, he added. |
