| NC leaders start to pick up holes for likely debacle at State, Central levels | | Anti-incumbency wave may spell doom for party | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 6: In a bid to save their skin during the ongoing Parliamentary elections National Conference leaders have started to give varied reasons for the likely debacle of the coalition in the State and at the Centre as well. National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has of late started blaming the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) for its follies and wrong policies. On no less than two occasions over the past 10 days, Dr. Abdullah said that wrong policies of the Government at the Centre have landed UPA into trouble. As far as state level is concerned the National Conference President accused People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of hatching conspiracy with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and playing a spoilsport to the National Conference-Congress coalition Government. He said that PDP has received funds from BJP and it was only after this development that it fielded candidates from five out of the six Lok Sabha seats in the State. On the other hand, Dr. Abdullah's younger brother, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal accused leaders and workers of Congress party of cross voting during the polling for Anantnag and Srinagar Lok Sabha seats. Dr. Kamaal who is the Additional General Secretary of National Conference in a statement recently said that Congress workers voted for PDP candidates in the Parliamentary elections for South and Central Kashmir Parliamentary seats. In the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, National Conference had to face wrath from the people during the election campaign on more than one occasion. The party's working president; Omar Abdullah had to cut a sorry figure as very few people turned up during the election rally last week at Pattan. The rally had to be re-located to the residence of NC leader, Abdul Rashid Shaheen. On the same day, Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone faced protests after he beat up some youth after they tried to project their demands in presence of Omar during an election rally at Watrigam-Rafiabad. Lone later on issued a statement while seeking apology of the incident that presented the party in a bad shape. Omar faced yet another embarrassment when National Conference workers did not attend a rally organized by Congress leaders and workers in his honour at Uri. On ground the NC workers are at loggerheads with the Congress workers and same gets reflected every now and then. Given the situation one should not be surprised if the Congress workers vote in favour of PDP candidate during election for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat. Inputs from the ground suggest that there is strong anti-incumbency wave flowing across the North Kashmir. Residents of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora seem to be fed up with the performance of National Conference-Congress coalition Government and they might give vent to their feelings while casting their votes on May 7. Sharief-ud-Shariq of National Conference may face the music from the people of North Kashmir as there is a notion that no development has taken place over the past five years or so. At the end of the day it seems that Dr. Kamaal's views regarding Congress hold weight and they need to be acknowledged. |
