| High Level Committee formed to end stalemate between lawyers, police | | | Sumit Sharma Jammu, May 6: The state government today constituted a four member committee to break the ice between lawyers and Jammu and Kashmir Police over the alleged manhandling of a lawyer by SHO Gandhi Nagar. The incident sparked protests from lawyers' fraternity who are demanding action against the SHO. Official sources told Early Times that the four member high level committee comprises of Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Home Department, B R Sharma, Secretary Planning, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Secretary Law and Shantmanu, Divisional Commissioner Jammu. The development comes after the lawyers under the banner of Bar Association of Jammu (BAJ) intensified their agitation with the strike going on for the last 17 days. The Bar gave a call for Jammu Bandh on Monday (May 5) and the same evoked good response from the people. The strike has paralyzed routine work in Jammu courts including the Jammu wing of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. "We are demanding suspension of the erring Station House Officer, Gandhi Nagar, who manhandled and thrashed our colleague in full public view," said M K Bhardwaj, President BAJ. Earlier, in a bid to resolve the issue, police department reportedly issued attachment cum suspension order of the SHO Gandhi Nagar, Arun Jamwal, who is on one month's leave, and two other officials posted in Gandhi Nagar, but lawyers termed the order as mere formality. "Verbally we have received the information that the cop along with two others has been suspended but nothing in Black and White has been received yet by any of the BAJ members. We will not concede less than our demand of suspension of the police officials," said Bhardwaj. It would be in place to mention that lawyers on April 17 went on strike and also staged protest and took out rallies against an alleged manhandling of one of their colleagues namely Harshvardhan Gupta by the cops in Nanak Nagar area for not carrying complete documents of his scooty. The victim alleged that instead of taking legal action or going as per law, police used abusive language against lawyers' fraternity and misbehaved with him besides keeping him in police custody and was later bailed out. It has been learnt from the sources that the members of the committee so constituted would meet the Bar members on Wednesday to assess the situation emanating after the strike of the lawyers. The committee members are also likely to meet senior police officers so that the stalemate between the lawyers and police is brought to an end. |
