| Increasing incidents of drowning: Residents rue administrative insensitivity | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 6: Several incidents of drowning in Tawi and Ranbir canal recently have brought to the fore the insensitivity of the administration which has failed to put warning signs in place to deter the common people from entering deep waters. It has become a routine affair that every year people get drowned in river Tawi or in Ranbir canal in Jammu city and die but there have been no deterrents put in place by the administration to keep people away from dangerous spots in both these water bodies. "The district administration Jammu and irrigation department must put sign boards in places where the water is dangerously deep. Police personnel and officials of irrigation must set up a joint control room which can quickly respond to any disaster so that lives can be saved," said Manohar Gupta, a resident of Jammu city. Couple of days back, five youth from Rajasthan drowned in Nikki Tawi area and two of them lost their lives while three were saved. They were on way back to their homes after paying obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Trikuta hills. The dead body of one of the deceased youth was fished out on the same day and today the dead body of another youth was fished out. "The administration must use barbed wires with sign board on both sides of Ranbir Canal and around Tawi river, dangerous places must be identified and people must not be allowed to enter the river at those places," said Irfan Ahmad, a resident of Banihal, whose friend few years back also lost life while taking bath in river Tawi. |
