| Baramulla Police `uphold order' by arresting father for son | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, May 6: To prevent any law and order problems in Baramulla parliamentary constituency which is going to polls on May 7, about 400 preventive arrests have been made during the past one week. Police in north Kashmir's Hajin town have detained an employee of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) instead of his son who is an alleged protester. Legal experts say it is a grave human rights violation, 52 year Abdul Rashid Parray according to his family was detained three days ago by police party and has been held since at police station Hajin. According to police, Parray's son Zubair Ahmad Parray was wanted in a stone pelting case . Parray detention instead of his son, Legal experts said amounts to violation of international and Indian law. According to reports Tahir Bano, Parray's wife has said that her husband was picked up by police party on Friday, "they asked him to accompany them to police station and talk to officer there, she said ,but he has been held since long time but I don't understand why he has been detained 'said Tahira, She added 'they are looking for Zubair he is not at home. We have told them go and arrest him why they have detained my husband. According to Tahira, Parray has undergone a multiple surgeries and remains usually ill, "how can they detain an ill person in a police station. In a nocturnal raid on Sunday night another elderly Ghulam Mohammad Hakeem was detained instead of his son, Showkat Hakeem, a separatist leader Showkat has said that police raided his home at around 1:40 am and took away his father. "Police cannot arrest anybody except the accused is found guilty and if it does, it amounts a gross human rights violation under India and international law." said high court lawyer, Syed Riyaz Khawar. "It also amounts to violation of state constitution in fact all law, such kinds of detentions are unheard of an illegal jurisprudence". Khawar said those detained instead of other could file a suit against police for an illegal detention. "It is like police taking somebody as hostage instead of somebody else "he added. Locals and dozen persons were detained in nocturnal raids across the town ahead of lok sabha polls in north Kashmir which are scheduled to be held on May 7. In other Mohallas, local said houses suffered massive damages due to police atrocities, in defiance to night raids, locals here remain awake whole night to prevent police from arresting civilians. All shops and other business establishments remained closed while there was thin movement of people on the roads. According to Station House Officer Hajin Ateequllaha said" damage might have occurred during detentions, these people use loudspeakers throughout the day. He said Zubair's father was held for some time. Later he has been let out to the best of my knowledge, the SHO said. |
