North Kashmir goes to polls today; Security at highest alert

Srinagar, May 6 : Taking lessons from the incidents that occurred on polling days in South and Central Kashmir, all extraordinary preventive measures have been put in place ahead of polling on North Kashmir Parliamentary seat which include detention of around 400 trouble mongers and deployment of additional forces in hyper sensitive areas. The details received from the police sources reveal that for past one week, around 400 people suspected as trouble mongers on polling day were arrested across North Kashmir to avoid any kind of trouble on May 7. Locals of Baramuallah District informed Early Times that besides hundreds of youth from many Towns and villages of North Kashmir, Police arrested four persons namely Mehraj Ahmad Mir, Jamal-ud-din Dar of Karhama Kunzer, Abdul Rehman Gojri of Hardapora and Abdul Hamid of Archana-derhama for pasting election Boycott posters in Singhpora village of Baramulla district. Sources said that people who have been arrested are either known stone pelters or are involved in anti-poll activities besides some former militants passively associated with separatist factions and intended to run election boycott campaigns across North Kashmir were also arrested from Sopore, Baramullah and Bandipora and Kupwara areas.
The details reveal that ahead of polling, heavy deployment of forces which include additional deployment of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Batallions of CRPF have also been made in some known volatile areas like Main town Sopore, Baramullah, Pattan where from information regarding eruption of possible untoward activities on polling day was received. North Kashmir which is scheduled to go for polls on May 7 according to the official figures has 11, 90, 766 voters out of which 6, 22,632 are male and 5,66,460 female and polling purpose 1616 polling booths have been set up with 1091 booths declared as "hypersensitive" and 455 as "sensitive".
