| Traingular contest expected in North Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 6; Amid unprecedented security measures, the Baramullah-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat is going to polls tomorrow. The North Kashmir constituency will witness triangular contest between PDP, NC and Peoples Conference. The candidates in fray include NC's Sharief-u-Din Shariq, People's Conference 's Abdul Salam Bajad, PDP's Muzafar Hussain Beigh and Awami Itihaad Party Engineer Rashid. Besides there are other leaders in fray which according to political analysts will not make any difference. However, according to political observers, Baigh is facing real contest from PC's Bajad in Kupwara district although NC represents four out of five assembly segments in the state legislature. "NC is out of contest in Kupwara district as the real fight in Kupwara and Bandipora districts is between Muzaffer Husain Baigh and Abdul Salam Bajad because the anti-incumbancy factor is so high in the twin districts besides Baigh has clear edge Karnah, Gurez and Kupwara constituencies where the majority population is of the Pahari speaking people" said a senior journalist who concluded his extensive tour of the district the other day. He said in Bandipora and Sonawari constituencies it is a one sided contest because Bandipora is represented by PDP while as in Sonawari, the incumbent MLA, M Akbar Lone is facing serious anti-incumbancy which could be gauged from the fact that wherever he visits in the constituency he is being greeted by stones and anti-NC slogans. In Baramulla district's Baramulla, Uri, Pattan, Sangrama, Sopore and Tangmerg constituencies the fight is betwean Baigh and Sharifudin Shariq of NC. As such, observers say, the contest is trainguler in the sense that Baigh faces challenge from NC in Baramullah while as it is Bajad of Sajad Lone's PC who challenges Baigh in Kupwara and Bandipora districts. In Langate, the contest is again between PDP and ER. Rashid of Awami Itihadd Party. Meanwhile searching of vehicles and frisking of the passengers has been intensified in all the districts and towns of the North Kashmir. Stringent security measures have been taken and security has been beefed up especially in restive Sopore, Bandipora, Pattan and Baramulla."The monitoring of the restive places have also been increased through CCTV cameras and police in plain clothes," sources said. They added that the security arrangements have been increased manifold after the blast in polling station at Wattergam Rafiabad. There are 14 candidates in fray. Baramulla Lok Sabha seat which is the largest constituency as electorate wise is comprised of 11,90766 voters. Of them 5,83,753 are in Baramulla, 3,93,400 in Kupwara and 2,11,967 in Bandipora. There are 1616 polling stations among which 1091 have been declared as hyper sensitive. Only 80 polling stations have been declared as normal. To ensure peaceful and violence free polling in North Kashmir, police have been taking preventive measures and have arrested hundreds of stone pelters and "trouble mongers". Police said that arrests have been effected in North Kashmir and around 60 stone pelters have been taken into preventive custody. |
