| Watergam explosion causes scare across constituency | | On polling eve, militants attack CRPF men at Sopore | | Syed Tahir Bukhari BARAMULLA, May 6: Ahead of voting for the Parliamentary constituency of Baramulla, militants strike in apple town of Sopore in North Kashmir's Baramulla district, causing injuries to three CRPF personnel in the late Tuesday evening attack. According to sources, gunmen attacked the CRPF men near the State Bank of India (SBI) in the volatile town of Sopore ,in which three CRPF of 179th battalion got critically injured hardly 10-hours before the start of election in Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. CRPF spokesperson Kishore Prasad said that some unknown militants attack CRPF party of 179 bn near State Bank of India in Sopore. "During the attack three of our men have sustained injuries and they have been immediately evacuated to nearby hospital for treatment", he said. Block Medical Officer (BMO) Dr Syed Masood told a local news agency that two injured CRPF men were brought to the hospital and both of them have been referred to Bone and Joint hospital Srinagar. He said that the duo had leg injuries. Sources identified both the injured CRPF men as Manoj Kumar and K Sujan. However, unconfirmed reports said that a civilian also got injured in the firing incident. Army's 22 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off the whole area and started searches to nab the attackers. Earlier, a deafening in Government Girls High School in Wateregam, Baramulla sent shock waves across the district. A polling station had been set up in the school for May 7 polling. According to reports, no one was hurt in the incident, however, minor damage was caused to the building, window panes and a side roof tin of the room that was housing Gym machinery for students. Following the explosion, Sopore police and Special Operation Group (SOG) team rushed to site to take on spot inspection. Police later said that it was a petrol bomb fired by some unknown persons to cause fear among locals. After the incident, Special Operation Group of police and Army's 32 RR search all class rooms of the said school, however, no any other explosive device was found. Besides later the search operation was expanded to residential areas to nab the attackers, however, a local Shopkeeper, Shabir Ahmad Rather was detained by Army and later he was released after questioning. According to sources, youth hurled stones on CRPF buses that were travelling towards their respective polling stations on Tuesday afternoon. They said police, however, lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the stone pelters. Later, CRPF dominated their respective polling stations. While hundreds of youth have been detained under preventive measure in various volatile areas of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts to avoid law and order problems during polls which is to take place on Wednesday. Meanwhile, reports said fresh threat posters of militant outfit 'Lashkar Toiba' had allegedly threatened people not to participate in Lok Sabha polls to be held on Wednesday across Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency. Earlier, posters in some areas of the constituency by militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen asked people to boycott voting. |
