| HC issue notice to Govt on protection of Wetland Reserves | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 29 : The High of Jammu and Kashmir at Jammu today issued notice to the state through Chief Secretary of J&K and to ten other government respondents on a Public Interest Petition seeking directions to initiate various steps for protection, restoration and conservation of water bodies, wetland reserves, water channels and other such reserves in Jammu and Kashmir state. A division bench comprising Justice Varinder Singh and Justice D. S. Thakur after hearing Advocate, Karan Sharma, the counsel for the petitioners submitted that wetland reserves situated in J&K have been on the verge of extinction due to blatant neglect and ruthless attitude of the government officials which has indirectly put threats with regard to environment, wildlife and availability of fresh ground water and that has caused serious floods due to the extinction and shrinking of such wetlands. Counsel for the petitioners further submitted that these wetland reserves act as the kidneys of environment and if these are not protected, the life will only sustain on dialysis. The PIL 37/2014 prayed for directions: to implement government order FST/20 of 1981 in its letter and spirit; Revenue department for demarcation of wetland reserves and handing over of these to Wildlife Department and the Administration to make these wetland reserves free from all sort of encroachments. The Public Interest Petition has been filed by group of activists- Rattan Singh, an Advocate, Bhusan Lal Parimoo, an environmental activist and Kant Kumar Sharma, a social activist. The division bench issued the notice to respondents to file their replies and listed the petition on Oct. 27, 2014. |
