After son Ajatshatru, is Dr Karan Singh switching over to BJP? | Dogra icon eying Raj Bhawan! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 27: Congress is in for more trouble with ex-President and later Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Dr. Karan Singh's new found love with BJP. His son and ex-MLC of National Conference (NC) Ajatshatru Singh joined BJP in New Delhi. National President of BJP Amit Shah held a press conference to announce Ajatshatru's entry into BJP. Not only this, he has been assigned the critical task of winning over Rajput votes for BJP from various corners of the state. Prior to joining BJP, Ajatshatru had switched over from Congress to NC, when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009. Omar immediately handed over ticket to the Legislative Council to Ajatshatru while ignoring several other party loyalists. If the sources are to be believed, it was Omar's father and ex-Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah who had vociferously batted for induction of Ajat in the Legislative Council. But what makes story of royal family switching sides frequently for purely lust of power interesting is news coming from inner circles of Congress that even Dr. Karan Singh has developed love for BJP. According to a Congress leader in New Delhi, Dr. Karan Singh was the lone man in the entire party who vociferously advocated for inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate two day international conference which the party had organized on November 17 and 18 to mark 125th birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The two-day event to highlight the legacy and world view of the first Prime Minister was attended by a host of international leaders and representatives of various political parties from India and abroad but none was invited from BJP. Dr. Singh, according to insiders had taken up the issue with General Secretary of the party Janardhan Divedhi; Ahmed Patel, the high profile Political Secretary of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Treasurer Moti Lal Vohra. What made the things worse for Dr. Karan Singh was that several loyalists of the party leadership saw this as change of heart since he sought invitation for BJP only a day after his son had switched sides and there was talk of him too taking a plunge. These loyalists, according to insiders accused Singh of having developed closeness with BJP and said that he knew the party line on Modi yet choose to seek an invitation for him, just to ensure that when he walks out, he could please Modi by saying that he fought for him in Congress. This, according to a top Congress leader is the route which Dr. Karan Singh has seemingly taken to reach back to the position where he was prior to making New Delhi home. They further said that the ex-Governor now has the only desire of returning to Raj Bhawan of J&K one more time. If that is not possible, they said that he would want Modi to appoint him as Vice-President of the country. Sources maintained that Dr. Karan has already held some meetings with his close friends in BJP. 83 year old Dr. Karan Singh is the head of World Hindu Council besides being a member of Rajya Sabha from Delhi. In 1949, at the age of 18, Singh was appointed as the regent of the state after his father stepped down as the ruler, following the state's accession to India. He served successively as regent, the first and last Sadr-i-Riyasat, and Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from 1965 to 1967. In 1967, he resigned as Governor and became the youngest-ever member of the Union Cabinet. From 1967 to 1984 Karan Singh was a member of the Lok Sabha. In 1984, he contested the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate from Jammu but lost the election. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha first representing National Conference from November 1996 to August 1999. Following differences on autonomy proposal approved by Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2000, he resigned from the National Conference and re-joined Congress. |
