Protests against PDD in North Kashmir

Bandipora, Dec 30: Scores of villagers staged massive protests on Tuesday against the Power Development Department, in twin districts of Baramulla and Bandipora.
According to sources, " hundreds of people staged a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) for not supplying power according to the scheduled curtailment in Bandipora and Baramulla districts.
Irshad Ahmad Dar of Sumbal told Early Times over phone that "Power situation is getting worse in recent times, people on Tuesday took to streets in various parts of Bandipora district and staged a massive protests against the PDD. Hundreds of people Tuesday staged a massive protest here against the Power Development Department (PDD) for what they termed as its "failure to maintain a proper power supply in the area, Dar said.
Early times have learnt from sources that, the protesters blocked the Bandipora-Srinagar road and disrupted the vehicular traffic on the road.The angry residents raised slogans against the PDD. They claimed that they have been compelled to live in the dark since past two weeks and demanded proper power supply in the area. According to sources that People staged protests in Sumbal market,Wangipora, Ajas, Soudnara, Safapora, and other adjacent areas.
The residents were demanding regular power supply seeking immediate intervention of the concerned authorities of the PDD to provide respite to the people from scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. Reports of protests against the non-availability of electricity were received from Panzipora and other areas of Sopore town of Baramulla district in North Kashmir on Tuesday.
Sources from Panzipora Sopore told this correspondent that the protesters shouted slogans against PDD and the Government. The agitated people said that PDD authorities are resorting to unscheduled power cuts in the non metered areas for 18- 20 hours in a day, which is completely injustice with these villages.
"Amid agonizing cold conditions, people from various areas are complaining of extended pesky power outages with some areas witnessing blackout for days together, sources added.
A local resident of Panzipora area Iftikar Ahmad Sofi said that, "PDD employees of Panzipora receiving station has lodged a compliant against me, but for God's sake what could we do except to protest,virtually we are without electricity for the past four days . We had no electricity for 18 hours in a day.
Government is forcing us to come on the streets to seek restoration of power supply. The PDD is violating its own schedule by keeping us without electricity for days together."
Junior Engineer of Sub Division Sopore Shabir Ahmad told early times that as per the present schedule, power remains off from 6-10 am for three days , from 10- 6 am two times and 6-8 three times in a week. The curtailment schedule is issued from higher authorities in Srinagar, and the curtailment is mainly in winter as there is high power loading in non metered areas and less in metered areas, he said.
