Independents would emerge as kingmakers if BJP-PDP talks fail | | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 30: As the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are adamant on their stands to have the Chief Minister's post and talks between the two parties seem to have hit a roadblock, five independent candidates and Peoples Conference led by Sajad Lone which has two MLAs can play a big role vis-à-vis government formation in Jammu and Kashmir in coming days. If PDP and BJP enter into an alliance, independents, who have won seven seats altogether, would become irrelevant as BJP-PDP combine would have 53 seats much more than required 44. As both the parties have started looking away from each other it has given these independents a chance to play a major role in the next government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. If PDP decides to join hands with Congress, it would need the support of at least four independent MLAs to reach the simple majority figure of 44 as PDP has 28 seats and Congress 12, which takes their tally to 40. The three MLAs from Kashmir M Y Traigami of CPI (M), Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen and Er Rasheed have already announced that they would support any government minus BJP. Congress had recently claimed that if PDP says yes to alliance with it need not worry about the independents. They would support the alliance. On the other hand if Bharatiya Janta Party and National Conference break the ice and strike a deal, again both the parties would need the support of four MLAs to reach the magic figure of 44 as BJP has 25 seats while NC has 15. The Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone has already made his intentions clear and is willing to support any dispensation with BJP in it. Two other independent MLAs, includingSyed Mohammad Baqir Rizvi from Zanskar and Pawan Gupta from Udhampur can fill in the gap to make it 44. Sources told Early Times that state Congress leaders during the past few days have been making Herculean efforts to ensure that they are able to get the support of at least five independent MLAs so that their party (Congress) can join hands with PDP and form the next government in the state. The Peoples Conference Chairman Sajd Gani Lone, according to the sources, has given a cold response to Congress and is more inclined towards BJP, which emerged as the second largest party by bagging 25 seats in the recent assembly polls first time in the electoral history of Jammu and Kashmir. Analysts are of the opinion that if PDP-BJP call off talks independents would call the shots and strike a "rich deal" for themselves and are all set to play kingmakers role. "They can lose relevance if the idea of grand alliance between PDP, NC and Congress materializes. It seems there are not many people either in NC or in PDP camp which are in favour of grand alliance mooted by the senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad," he added. Observers believe that if PDP and BJP fail to strike a deal and next government is formed with the help of independents it would have far reaching consequences and it would be an unstable government. |
