| Sports Council loses lakhs, courtesy minister | | | Abodh Sharma

JAMMU, Apr 14: Brazenly flouting the rule book, the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council has allocated its sports field in the city to a private organization for organizing a non sporting event for ten days undermining the spirit of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, which has restrained the authorities from allowing use of sports fields of the city for non sporting purposes and also , forcing the regular trainees to forgo their training.
Not only has the sports field been allocated for non sporting purpose, but the laid tariff for allocating these grounds of the Sports Council has been grossly compromised on the behest of Minister for sports, in the process causing huge loss to the council itself.
Sources in the sports council disclosed that the Shastri Nagar play field of the J&K SSC has been allocated to a private organization for organizing a ten day long religious function, eventhough the State High Court has directed the authorities not to allow use of play fields for non sporting events in a PIL filed in this regard. The authorities did not only demeaned the spirit of the HC direction, but compromised on agreed tariff while allocating the ground to private persons.
"The Council authorities have fixed a tariff of Rs. 22 thousand per day for this field , but reportedly on the behest of the minister, the rent was cut down to mere Rs. 2 thousands per day, thus manufacturing a loss of Rs. 2 lakhs in ten days" revealed an officer in the Council secretariat.
Sources also disclosed that a Jammu based Minister had sought allocation of play field in favour of the private applicants on concessional rates, following which the Minister for sports had issued directions for the same. "J&K Sports Council is already starved of funds and finance department had been brow beating the council to generate its own funds, yet Ministers themselves flout norms to coerce the Council into losses" he said, adding that it is nothing but financial misappropriation and non one should be allowed to bend rules.
Meanwhile, Sources also disclosed that the organizers of the religious program are slated to earn handsome money out of offerings during the ten days program, but would pay only 20 thousands to the Council in rent against actual rent of Rs, 2 lakhs, twenty thousands. They also disclosed that a couple of officers have been flouting norms in allocating Sports fields of the Council to private parties for non sporting events for vested interests. |
