Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Mar 5: Encroached forest land in north Kashmir districts is being used for cultivation of cannabis and poppy, which has become a major threat for the security forces in Kashmir. CFK north Kashmir had mentioned that cannabis and poppy is cultivated on encroached forest land, had raised big questions that who is pushing youth into this illegal business.
In 2015, a letter was issued by Conservative of Forests Kashmir north circle Sopore, vide no: FD/CFN/L/2015-16/367-77 dated 19-05-2015 on the subject, " reported cultivation of cannabis (bang) and poppy on encroached forest land bordering Kamraj Forest Divison and Bandipora Forest Divison."
Letter said that as per information posted by prominent citizens and social workers on the popular social networking site (Facebook), cultivation of banned cannabis and poppy has been seen by the team recently (May 17, 2015) during their trekking to Nagmarg.
It is reported that a stretch of approx 7 kms between upper Manglu (Rajpora-Rampura belt) and upper Divar-Trmukha-Bomas- Nagmarg side had become "Opium Ridge" , said letter.
You are as such directed to pool in your men and machinery at the earliest, seek adequate assistance from the district administration and police and launch an effective drive against the forest land grabbers and destroy the illegal crop of cannabis/poppy cultivated over the encroached forest land; copy of order is in possession of ET.
RTI activist Rasikh Rasool alleged that there is a vast field of land in this forest area where charas cannabis is being cultivated and supplied to various places of J&K via Kupwara and Bandipora.
Those people who are doing this illegal business are having patronage of a political bigwig from the same district; there are FIRs in Kupwara where from such huge quantity of charas comes, even some females also surfaced in this heinous crime, said Rasikh.
