| J&K Govt snubs separatists, goes ahead with construction of Baltal-Amarnath road | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: In an apparent snub to separatists, the Jammu and Kashmir government has started the reconstruction of Baltal-Amarnath road in Ganderbal district.
A Kashmir based daily on Friday reported that reconstruction work is going on in full swing. "The construction of road from Baltal to the Amarnath cave shrine would prove beneficial for the lakhs of pilgrims who visit the cave shrine through the Baltal route," said an analyst.
He said that the state government has taken a "bold decision" to go ahead with the reconstruction of the road.
When the construction work of the road was taken up last time separatists had raised hue and cry and threatened to launch an agitation if the construction work of the road is not stopped. The then NC-Congress regime had succumbed under pressure and stalled the process.
The analyst said, "The present PDP-BJP regime seems to have ignored the threats of the Pakistani stooges and has put its foot down. The people at the helm have sent a clear message to separatists that they cannot dictate terms."
A Kashmir watcher said that it's the duty of the Jammu and Kashmir government to facilitate the smooth movement of the pilgrims. "Constructing a road from Baltal to cave shrine is a welcome step and everyone should support it. If anyone tries to oppose this move he should be dealt with sternly. The people at the helm have proved that they are not afraid of the threats and the J&K government is committed to provide all the facilities to Amarnath yatris. So no one should object to it."
The Kashmir based daily quoting Forest officials said the road construction is eco-friendly and won't pose any threat to the eco-fragile environment in the area. "The construction of the road is not in cement or tarmac. They are using sand and tiles," Forest Range Officer Sind-Kangan Range, Muneer Ahmad told the daily.
He said they had earlier stopped the construction. "We had stopped the construction last time. But the government policy was to resume the construction."
However, other top officials including the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir said that they are unaware about any such development. |
