Police cracks mysterious murder case; arrests woman, paramour

Early Times Report

sRINAGAR, June 9: The Jammu and Kashmir police solved a murder case by arresting the wife of a deceased and her paramour in Srinagar, a Police Spokesman said on Saturday evening.
According to the Spokesperson, Asifa, along with her paramour Moulvi Tanveer, had killed Abiroo Shafi Bhat of Khwajapora, Nowgam, on the intervening night of March 10 and 11, 2018.
However, on the morning of March 11, she called her brother-in-law, who lives next door and told him, ''Your brotheris not waking up from sleep.'' She also rang up her parents and father-in-law, who live nearby. The couple and their seven-year-old daughter lived separately and on March 10, the child was left with her maternal grandparents at Aloochi Bagh.
The family buried Abiroo Shafi, believing that he had died of natural causes. However, those who performed the last ablution, said the body had become very stiff and was unusually cold. They also noticed some marks on the neck, but could not suspect any foul play.
On May 14, the father of the deceased filed a complaint with the police station Nowgam, suspecting foul play in the death of his son. On the basis of this complaint, police station Nowgam started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC.
During proceedings, the family requested the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar for exhumation of the body. On May 26, 2018, a team from the Forensic department of the Government Medical College Srinagar and doctors from the Health department exhumed the body and conducted the autopsy. Although the final report was yet to be received, but the initial findings revealed that the prima facie cause of death was strangulation. Police then accordingly registered a case under 302 RPC and started investigation.
Probe revealed that few days before his murder, Abiroo Shafi had caught Asifa red-handed, talking to Moulvi on phone. Shafi passed the number to his cousin and asked him to fetch its details. Feeling annoyed, Asifa proceeded to her maternal home and called up Moulvi. The duo hatched a conspiracy to kill Abiroo and as per their plan, Asifa kept her minor girl child at maternal home. On March 10, Asifa gave Shafi a glass of milk laced with sedatives, putting him to sleep at once. Between 0000 hrs and 0300 hrs, Moulvi and Asifa strangulated Shafi to death.
In their confession, the accused said they were planning to marry and had been in relationship for more than a year. Both of them have been arrested, the Spokesman added.
