Early Times Report

Kishtwar, June 25: A 22-year-old Ramban girl attempted suicide following her molestation on the Eid day last week.
The girl (name withheld) filed a written complaint before the Station House Officer Ramban stating that a youth named Iqbal Shah, son of Mohammad Altaf, of Ramban, had started her harassing mentally and physically, forcing her to leave the Jammu University where she was studying.
She stated that even after she reached her home, the youth started harassing her again and again. She said she informed her parents about her harassment. On the Eid ul Fitr day when she was on way to the home of her friend, the accused after finding her at an isolated placed attempted to drag her inside his vehicle with the intention to rape her, she alleged. She said she somehow managed to escape from his clutches by pelting a stone on him, and in the melee, his vehicle got damaged.
She stated that after reaching home she brought the matter into the notice of her family members and later approached the police station Ramban. She said that instead of taking action against the accused, the police tried to put pressure to withdraw her complaint.
She said that police also threatened her that they will lodge a counter FIR against her for damaging the vehicle of the accused person. She said that after finding herself in the middle of the storm where even the protectors of law instead of helping her were found harassing her, she made a suicide attempt by cutting her vein, but she was saved by the family members who shifted her to hospital.
She stated that after this drastic step, Ramban police registered a case but did not arrest the accused who is still roaming free and is continuously harassing her and her family by using both money and political power.
She said that if pelting stone on the vehicle of the accuse in her defence is crime, then she is a criminal and questioned the "Beti Bachao, Beti Padao" slogan of government. She urged upon the government and senior police officers to take action against the culprit as well as against the police person who are harassing her.
