'Mains exam scheduled amidst sweltering heat to help Kashmiri candidates'
KAS aspirants from Jammu region allege discrimination
6/26/2018 11:24:51 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 26: The KAS aspirants from Jammu region are up in arms against the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission for announcing the main exam schedule in the midst of the summer season.
The exams, which are scheduled to be held from July 2 tentatively, in Jammu and Kashmir simultaneously, were supposed to commence last year but Commission messed up the entire process. "The JKPSC till now has published the datesheet of the mains examination four times. It also conducted a few papers when the matter was subjudice, which eventually led to the cancellation of the entire examination by the High Court and inclusion of 2300 more students and a new date sheet again," aspirants told Early Times.
"We the candidates from Jammu are facing extreme weather conditions due to prevailing heat wave in Jammu region. The JKPSC ignored this fact," they said.
"Is it just and fair that one part of the state will be writing this crucial exam in favourable and pleasant conditions while the other half will be reeling under such severe heat? Isn't this against the ethos of equality of opportunity guaranteed under the Constitution of India?," they asked.
"A very important consideration in this regard is that this exam isn't a one day affair. Its eight papers, where four papers are back to back, one conducted in the morning session and the other in the afternoon session. The aspirants from Jammu will have to battle not only 45 degrees of temperature but severely ill equipped examination centers, where the facilities are bleak and power cuts are recurring," the aspirants alleged.
They alleged that JKPSC is resorting to discrimination by such tactics as the aspirants appearing for the exams in Kashmir would get an edge over the candidates from the Jammu region. "Holding such important exams in the midst of the summer season seems to be a well calculated move to keep the aspirants from the Jammu region at bay," they claimed.
Aspirants said that they have been working hard but the pesky power cuts amidst sweltering heat and humidity have made it difficult for them to concentrate. "If the JKPSC conducts the examinations on the date announced by it the candidates from Jammu region would find it very difficult and their counterparts in Kashmir can score a point over them. It looks like that a few people in Kashmir want their kith and kin to clear the exam by hook or crook and these exams seem to be a formality to induct them in J&K's bureaucracy," they alleged.
Aspirants from Jammu region made a fervent appeal to Governor's administration to intervene and get these exams postponed till the weather becomes pleasant in Jammu region.
Despite repeated attempts the JKPSC Chairman couldn't be contacted for his comments.
