Early Times Report
Jammu, June 27: Despite a blanket ban on construction work in 'ghair mumkin' khads, administration of Akhnoor sub-division has turned a blind eye towards construction and illegal mining at village Gandharwan in Akhnoor.
"We had apprised the Sub Divisional Magistrate Akhnoor about the matter, but he did not take it seriously as no action has been taken so far," some local residents said.
The habitants of village Gandharwan lodged a written compliant with SDM Akhnoor on December 22 last year. Following inaction of the local administration of Akhnoor, the inhabitants lodged a complaint with Governor of the state.
"Illegal mining of Khad in the state has been banned by government for a long time, but in village Gandharwan (Khad land khasra no. 931), the illegal mining of khads is going on at very fast pace", reads the complaint.
Locals are worried because mining of the khad as causing serious threat of flood for the Panchayat Gandarwan and other nearby villages, reads the complaint lodged with Governor.
"There are some stone crushers and one tarcoal plant of GREF running in the khad which are mining khad illegally without any permission or sanction, and these crushers and tarcoal plant are causing serious pollution threats to thousands of villagers residing there", said the inhabitants of village Gandharwan.
Many of them suffer from asthama and other serious diseases. "We have approached all revenue officers of the tehsil but they did not stop illegal mining of the Khad", reads the complaint.
As monsoon is approaching and mining is still in process, it can trigger floods also. "Pollution by the crushers because of the illegal work is also a serious threat for us. So kindly take the matter seriously and order the concerned for immediate action in the matter," reads the complaint.
