Early Times Report

Jammu, July 5: Defeating the main objective of various researches conducted in agriculture sector by the scientists to boost its production, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology has failed to utilize its research results for the welfare of farmers by not formulating long term plans for their training in the field of agriculture.
Sources told Early Times that the University Act, 1982, envisages that the University would conduct demonstrations and training programmes for farmers, students in coordination with other allied departments of J&K State.
"But it has been observed that no long term, annual plan had been scheduled for demonstrating results of research and for imparting trainings during the period 2011-16. No training calendar was prepared and demonstrations and trainings were held on ad hoc basis.
Evaluation and impact assessment of demonstrations and trainings was not conducted," they said.
Moreover, the University had not maintained a database of developed varieties indicating details such as characteristics of varieties developed, date of proposal by the breeder, references of University Varietal Evaluation Committee (UVEC), State Seed Sub Committee (SSSC) and Central Seed Commission (CSC) CSC including their recommendations and notification references of Government of India.
They further informed that the notified varieties developed by the University from time to time had not been got registered to safeguard the interests of the breeders by preventing unauthorized exploitation of such varieties, seeds for commercial advantage by unintended people.
