GMC, associated hospitals forced to postpone surgeries
Junior docs' strike

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 5: A number of patients will have planned operations or check-ups in Government Medical College and Hospital and its associated hospitals cancelled as junior doctors have gone on strike in support of their colleagues at GMC Srinagar.
Pertinently, nearly 300 junior doctors of the GMC Jammu and its associated hospitals have gone on strike from Wednesday in solidarity with their Kashmir-based counterparts who submitted en-mass resignations on last Tuesday after the GMC Srinagar terminated 25 of their colleagues.
On Thursday, a number of surgeries were cancelled. The concerned doctors were forced to reschedule surgeries while thousands of patients will have to see their doctor on another day because OPDs and IPDs have also been boycotted by the striking doctors in Jammu.
"We came to the hospital because my mother was supposed to undergo an abdominal surgery, but the doctors said it will be done after the strike is over. We had got today's date after months; I don't know what will happen," said an attendant who visited hospital for his mother's treatment.
"It is very unfortunate that senior doctors were willing to operate upon the patients but the Head of the Anesthesia department didn't cooperate," a group of senior doctors told Early Times. Even, emergency services, including emergency surgeries, were also affected due to strike despite the government invoking ESMA. The Head of Anesthesia department Dr. Smriti Gulati could not be connected for comment.
GMC's Resident Doctors Association said that the junior doctors were still on strike as the government didn't take back its decision and the terminated doctors were not reinstated so far. "Meetings at different levels were going on and we are hoping that the issue will resolve as soon as possible. But if they failed to reinstate doctors, we will stop the emergency services at all the hospitals and only the government will be responsible for the consequences," the RDA spokesperson said.
