Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 17: No one had ever imagined that Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government would fell so suddenly and in a dramatic manner, but it did happen on June 19. It was not Mehbooba Mufti who pulled the plug; it was BJP national president Amit Shah, who sprung a big surprise by announcing withdrawal of support to the Mehbooba Mufti "unholy" government. And the major arguments that he advanced were all the more surprising. One, Mehbooba Mufti had ignored Jammu and Ladakh. Two, things under Mehbooba Mufti had deteriorated to the extent that the BJP had been left with no other option but to say goodbye to her.
And once Amit Shah withdrew the support, both the coalition partners took no time to tear into each other. Mehbooba Mufti was the first to lambaste not just the BJP, but the Narendra Modi government itself. She threatened that any move on the part of the Centre to break her PDP would be fraught with dangerous consequences. She threatened replication of 1987 saying split in the PDP would mean birth of more Salahuddins and Yasin Maliks. She forgot the past history, including the role of her own father late Mufti Sayeed as leader of the Congress party in Kashmir.
She administered the threat on July 13. The selection of the date and venue were significant. Kashmiris observe July 13 as "Martyrs' Day.
By choosing July 13, Mehbooba Mufti made her intentions very clear: She would promote militancy and anti-state forces, notwithstanding the fact that she herself had lost confidence of her own many lawmakers.
And the BJP, which remained mum for almost 38 months and allowed Mehbooba Mufti to destroy Jammu and Ladakh politically, economically, administratively and socially. None of its leaders wither in J&K or in New Delhi uttered a word against Mehbooba Mufti. Contrarily, they supported her and her policies claiming that "it was for the first time that Jammu and Ladakh got their due share in the governance of the state" and that "Mehbooba Mufti had not done anything that could hurt the national interest in the state".
It was only after July 13 that the BJP really took on Mehbooba Mufti. So much so, it held press conferences and asked its cadres to hold a demonstration in Jammu against Mehbooba Mufti. The BJP "nationalists" burnt the effigy of Mehbooba Mufti and demanded her arrest, saying "she is anti-national", the language the BJP would use till December 2014. It was, in fact, the BJP which coined the terms "Baap-Beti" (Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti) and "Baap-Beta" (Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah". Ever since, the BJP and the PDP are taking on each other and washing their dirty linen in public. It happens when friends turn foes.
