KUPWARA, July 31: In the first incident of its kind, unidentified persons on Tuesday overpowered a cop and snatched his service rifle from Kandhar area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
According to reports that the policeman namely Mohammad Ishaq (belt no. 436) of 4th IRP bn who is part of the deployment in wake of former minister and MLA Abdul Haq Khan, was overpowered by some persons and snatched his service rifle near Kandhar area of Maidanpora in Lolab.
Sources told early times that the incident is first of its kind in the frontier district.
From past few weeks, the militancy related incidents have increased in this border district, and security forces are keeping close vigil on the movement of people in the area, sources said.
A senior police official said that, some unknown persons snatched service rifle of a cop that was deployed with MLA Lolab, adding that soon after the incident a joint team of army and SOG launched a hunt to nab the attackers.
Meanwhile militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen has owned the rifle snatching incident that occurred in this border district on Tuesday.
However Hizb Operational Spokesperson Burhanuddin have told Srinagar based news agency over phone that a group of militants from the outfit after overpowering a policeman snatched his rifle in Kupwara.
The spokesperson said that militants managed to reach at their destination along with the service rifle after the incident.
Pertinently, a policeman identified as Muhammad Ishaq of 4th Battalion of Indian Reserve Police was overpowered by a group of militants near Kandhar area of Kuligam in Lolab Valley. The militants fled from the spot along with the service rifle of the cop.
It is learnt that a couple of days back, the same Hizb outfit decamped with four service rifles of cops in South Kashmir.
