Fake Gun License racket: More skeletons likely to tumble out
8/12/2018 11:04:34 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 12: Four Indian Administrative Officers (IAS) of Jammu and Kashmir Cadre have been suspended and several lower rung officials of Jammu and Kashmir Government may land in trouble after their role surfaced in fake gun license racket which was unearthed by Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Rajasthan.
After the fake gun license scam was unearthed by the ATS Rajasthan, the state government initiated parallel investigation through Vigilance Organization and later on the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
If sources are to be believed, four IAS officers of J&K Cadre are likely to face the heat as their active role in preparation of fake gun licenses has come to the fore. "There are so many agents of the IAS officers who are still undercover through whom officers used to collect money for making fake licenses despite involvement of some clerks of the offices of the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) who are the issuing authority of the gun licenses", said a source.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir issued maximum number of gun licenses after Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with active gun licenses at a whopping 12.77 lakh people followed by Jammu and Kashmir where 3.69 lakh people possess arms licenses.
The secret 'Operation Zubeida' initiated in May was launched by Anti-Terrorism Squad, Rajasthan, to uncover the sale of illegal fire arms in the state.
The security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have shown deep concern over issuance of gun licences randomly without making "proper verifications" despite one person is being booked under the Arms Act in Jammu and Kashmir after every 48-hours.
As per the official data, 1826 cases have been registered since 2008 to March 2016 under the Arms Act in JK. The data reveals that 352 cases were registered in 2008 under the Arms Act in J&K whose number reduced to 289 and 225 in 2009 and 2010 respectively. There was slight increase in registration of cases in 2011 when 231 people were booked under this Act.
