Pakistan rakes up UN mediation on Kashmir issue
10/1/2018 10:57:06 PM
India has ridiculed Pakistan for demanding settlement of the Kashmir issue as per the UN resolutions. India has conveyed to Pakistan that one of the main provisions of the UN resolutions was that Pakistan should withdraw its troops from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir and when Islamabad refused to pull out its troops from the Occupied Kashmir Pakistan had lost legitimacy in demanding settlement of the Kashmir issue through the UN resolutions Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi urged United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to resolve the issue of Kashmir in accordance with resolutions passed by the intergovernmental organisation. During a meeting with the UN chief, Qureshi discussed issues plaguing the region and agreed that regional peace can only be achieved through dialogue.
Qureshi is attending 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The foreign minister briefed the UN chief on the alleged atrocities committed by Indian forces in Kashmir. "The Kashmir issue should be resolved according to UN resolutions, which should be enforced on all parties," he said adding, "A peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue should reflect locals' wishes as well as be in line with the statues of the United Nations." He also discussed the first-ever report on Kashmir by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that had called for a global investigation into several violations. And again India has conveyed to Pakistan that if Islamabad talks of alleged atrocities committed by the Indian forces on the people of Kashmir why so? And if Pakistan scratches its head it may realize that after the export of terror alleged atrocities by the Indian forces have increased.
Qureshi also favours bilateral talks, talks between India and Pakistan for resolving various issues that have bedevilled their relations. But Pakistan should realize that for the last five years India has been telling Pakistan that it has kept its doors open for talks provided Pakistan stopped export of terror to India, including Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad has not responded to this demand. India has suggested to Pakistan to stop ingress of militants but there is no response from Islamabad. India wants all the arms training camps for militants to be shut but there is no response. And as long as incidents of militancy related violence peak in Kashmir Pakistan will get a chance to seek UN mediation but India has already rejected any third country mediation.
