Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Oct 9: Scores of villages in this border district are without the basic infrastructure like drinking water and electricity beside good roads.
Sources said that the situation in remote villages of Kupwara district is facing acute shortage of power and consumers said the power supply was erratic for the past one week and voltage was also low.
Local residents of Kupwara told Early Times that, "the power supply lines have been tied to poles and trees and they are lying naked and posing a serious danger to humans and livestock. "The electricity is disrupted for hours despite of paying a monthly power tariff towards the department concerned.
Many far flung areas are without electricity poles, and they have hardly seen electricity, the harsh winter has almost approached, and the department concerned is in deep slumber, said a local resident of Kupwara village.
The voltage is so low that it fails to illuminate even a small room. We are having no choice but to take dinner in candlelight.
"Our children hardly concentrate on their studies, as the power remains on and off for several hours, even though we pay monthly tariff in time and still we don't get the electricity as we were supposed to, said Javid Ahmad.
He said that, "We fail to understand that why PDD had not enlisted these far flung areas for the repair as in most villages no repairs have been done since the electrification scheme was launched decades before in Jammu And Kashmir State.
A group of students complained that power is playing hide and seek and during night hours, the supply went off for hours. They said they cannot study till late hours as University and Board exams are very near and unscheduled curtailment have frustrated them at large.
