| NC, PDP fear new faces could replace 'family rule' in J&K | | |

JAMMU, Oct 10: Assertion of Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik that the foreign educated young man could be the new Mayor of Srinagar city has created ripples in the National Conference camp.
Last month NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu had resigned from the party to contest the municipal polls in the Valley. He had disagreed with the decision of the NC leadership to boycott the municipal and panchayat polls in the state.
Mattu saying goodbye to National Conference had triggered speculations that second rung leaders in PDP and NC would follow the suit. "The exact number of people who deserted NC and PDP would come to fore only after the results of these elections are announced," said a source.
He said that Mattu is not the only leader who deserted his party. "Picture will become clear soon," the source added.
An analyst said that since the day PDP-BJP government has fallen in the state the thrust is being laid on introducing new faces in the political arena of the Kashmir Valley. "If the people at the helm succeed in roping in new people it would be a setback for NC and PDP especially for Abdullahs and Muftis. During all these years these families have made everyone believe that they only can rule Jammu and Kashmir and no one can replace them," the analyst added.
A Kashmir watcher said that both Abdullahs and Muftis have realized that they are going to face stiff opposition in the Valley and the new generation of politicians could challenge their hegemony. "Both Abdullahs and Muftis have dropped enough hints that both the parties could join hands to keep the national parties away from the power. But it looks like that their dream to come together and rule the state again won't turn into reality as the cracks within the PDP and NC are wide and open," the Kashmir watcher added.
He said that NC's overreaction to Governor Malik's statement indicates that party is unhappy with the fact that the leader who quit the NC could get the top post. "History stands testimony to the fact NC and PDP have mostly depended on their family members to run the party and the government. Very rarely important posts have gone to the outsiders. But this time around tables have been turned on them and new people with the new ideas are all set to emerge on the political arena of the Valley. NC and PDP would have to put their acts together if they have to survive in politics," said a politician. |
