SRINAGAR, Oct 22: Registered political parties in the country are allotted a symbol and the same is used by these parties while fighting elections as and when they are conducted. However, a political party of the state claims quite contrary to the laid down norms.
Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone claims that the party candidates were not allotted a common symbol during the recently concluded civic polls in the state. The party said that its candidates were allotted different symbols during the civic polls. This is somewhat perplexing and one is forced to cast doubt about the same.
As soon as the elections concluded Lone claimed grand success in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and said that his party won maximum number of seats in the SMC. This is despite the fact that out of 74 wards independents were declared successful on 53 wards. Lone claimed that most of independents belonged to his party.
Lone who is the chairman of his faction of Peoples Conference said that since the party candidates were allotted different symbols the picture was somewhat unclear about the party position at least in SMC. He even went a step ahead and said that Srinagar's Mayor would be from his party.
Lone, who was a minister in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in Jammu & Kashmir said that Junaid Mattu would be the new Mayor of summer capital of the state. Mattu, the ousted National Conference (NC) spokesman won the election from three wards of SMC.
Sources told Early Times that Lone wants to bring in Mattu into his party fold and it was due to this reason that the former minister is sending feelers that Mattu would be the new Mayor of Srinagar. Lone wasted no time and conveyed his greetings to Mattu through Twitter on winning the civic polls.
Once a darling of Lone, Mattu parted ways with the earlier and joined the NC. He was appointed as spokesman of NC and would issue statements on behalf of the newly joined party. Mattu left the NC as soon as the party decided not to fight the municipal elections in the state. He fought the elections and won from Rawalpora, Solina and Bud Dal wards of SMC.
"The Peoples Conference could not win a single ward in the Kupwara municipality despite the fact that Kupwara being hometown of Lone. On the other side the party claims success in the SMC and says that it would form the local government in the summer capital of the state. Only time will tell who stands where," said sources.
Sources said that the position of Mayor has assumed significance and it is expected that there would be a tussle for the Mayor of SMC. Mattu is all set to lock horns with a leading businessman of the city. The businessman Sheikh Imran is in good books of the people at helm in New Delhi and some people are pitching him as the next Mayor of Srinagar.
