'Rogue elements' contested ULB polls in Kashmir: Mehbooba
Frustration grips PDP
10/25/2018 10:49:10 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 25: Attempts are being made in Kashmir to arouse passions and muddy the Indian waters in the state. Frustration seems to have gripped Kashmiri parties like the PDP and the NC and both have been trying hard to deflect the people's attention from the real issues of governance by chanting Pakistan and dialogue and terming the whole ULB Polls exercise as a futile exercise.
Mehbooba Mufti has gone to the extent of terming as "rogue elements" those who contested the just-held ULB polls in Kashmir and threatened that this exercise could lead to more trouble in the Valley. "Rogue elements were lured by money to contest the local body polls in Kashmir and the low turnout has defeated the very purpose of holding these elections," Mehbooba Mufti was quoted as saying.
"With the situation already tense, holding a grassroots-level election like this was not advisable. Now, with the very low participation in the Valley, the whole purpose of the exercise has been defeated. These polls could lead to problems in the future, since many 'rogue elements', who came forward for the elections, were lured by money. Unfortunately, not many good people came forward to fight this election because of the peculiar situation, which will have far-reaching consequences in future," she was also quoted as saying.
She didn't just stop here. She further said that these elections were held under fear and suspicion and only rogue elements came forward. "In democracy, space is not created; it is given by the people. Since these elections were held under fear and suspicion, mostly rogue elements came forward. A lot of money was spent to lure people, but despite that, none of the parties (read BJP, People's Conference and Congress) were able to attract good persons," she further reportedly said.
By dismissing as rogue elements those who contested ULB elections in Kashmir, the PDP has only insulted them. Those who contested the election had not come from Israel or Myanmar or USA. They were all residents of Kashmir, including internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus living in Jammu since their migration in January 1990.
It needs to be underlined that both the PDP and the NC had boycotted the ULB polls over the issue of Article 35-A.
