Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 26: To ensure peaceful panchayat elections, the security forces have gone behind militants as over 20 have been killed in the current month.
The militants have threatened several times to disturb urban local bodies and panchayat polls. The urban local bodies polls recently concluded but the panchayat polls are yet to be held in Jammu and Kashmir.
The nine-phase panchayat polls in the state to 316 blocks in 4,483 Panchayat Halqas comprising 35,029 Panch constituencies will be held from November 17.
The polling for next eight phases will be held on November 20, 24, 27, 29, December 1, December 4, December 8, and December 11.
To ensure peaceful polls, the security forces has intensified operations with the killing of over 25 militants in the first 26 days.
The killings of top militant commanders Manan Wani and Mehraj-ud-din Bangroo have been the most prominent.
Contrary to the previous months, most of the forces operation in October occurred in north and central Kashmir where 14 militant have been killed in five encounters.
A police official said that operations have been intensified in view of panchayat polls. "We want to ensure peaceful elections," the official said.
The official said that around 400 security companies have been brought from outside for the polls. "There are security issues in few areas of south Kashmir but government will take care of," he said.
The killing of political activists before urban local bodies elections and militant threats have created a fear among the candidates and workers of political parties in Kashmir, who seek adequate security before and after the polls.
A candidate who too wished not to be named said that government shall ensure secure environment for the candidates. "There are many separatists despite their anti-national stand are provided adequate security while we people who want to strengthen democracy are craving even for a single PSO," he said.
Sources said scores of political activists are taking refuge in rented houses near the police stations.
"My family members are worried about my safety and security, since I decided to contest elections. Government shall ensure a secure environment for us. Even after polls, adequate security arrangements shall be put in place," Asif Ahmad (name changed), a resident of south Kashmir said.
