| 1400 apple trees damaged in Surasyar block | | Untimely snowfall wreaks havoc across Kashmir | | Early Times Report
Budgam, Nov 3 : The untimely snowfall across Kashmir valley has created havoc in the upper reaches of Budgam , Shopian , Anantnag , Kulgam and Baramulla districts. In Surasyar block of Budgam around 1400 apple trees have been damaged in handful of villages. The damage is said to be much higher as details from other areas of Budgam are yet to come. Details available with Early Times through its sources in villages of Batwodder , Goggee Pathri , Branwar , Bonen reveal that around 1400 trees have been damaged due to development of cracks in the apple trees. These cracks have developed because of huge weight caused due to accumulation of snow on apple trees. In some villages the apples were yet to be harvested and that caused extensive damage to the apple fruit as well. The orchardists of village Batwodder village while showing its concern over untimely snowfall in Kashmir valley has appealed Government that affected farmers especially the apple growers whose orchards got damaged shall be adequately compensated. " In Batwodder village only more than 200 apple trees have been completely damaged , apple crop has also been damaged " said Mushtaq Ahmad Lone a local resident and a social activist The affected villagers whose trees have been damaged in Batwodder include Ghulam Mohammad Chopan 55 trees, Ali Mohammad Wagay 40 trees , Mushtaq Ahmad Wagay 30 trees and Mushtaq Ahmad Lone 20 trees. In addition to fruit bearing trees hundreds of non fruit bearing trees have also been damaged like polulars , kikar . Sources have told Early Times that more than 300 walnut and pear trees are also said to have been damaged in 5 villages of Surasyar block. The sufferers have appealed to the Divsional Commissioner Kashmir , DC Budgam and Director Horticulture Kashmir to send teams for making immediate assessment of the damages caused to fruit trees especially apple orchards. |
